  • Oversee the general operation of IITA's Communications and Information Program as Acting Head of the program for four months per year – additional units include the Library and Documentation Center, Conference Center, and the Editorial and Public Awareness Units.
  • Coordinating the publications workflow through editors, compositors and graphic designers to the Web, the press, and the bindery.
  • Management of the annual operational and capital budget to ensure operational expenditure reductions, and efficient asset management.
  • Where critical design quality is essential, design and produce conference displays, publications and public awareness materials where necessary.
  • Training staff and partners in the use of publishing and Web development tools and techniques.
  • Evaluating and introducing new technologies and computer applications to IITA where necessary.

Successes

  • The training of the compositors in traditional typographic conventions and the development of a low cost digital pre-press output have produced significant publication quality improvements at reduced costs.

  • Through the support given to local commercial print houses IITA publications now reach near international quality standards.

  • Continued development and administration of the IITA Web site, paying particular attention to bandwidth variations experienced by target audiences.
  • Training individuals in Web site maintenance and administration to enable IITA’s Web site to be maintained by Nigerian national staff.
  • On an institute-wide basis, produce training documentation for production of World Wide Web publishing media to establish training courses for staff and partners.
  • Development of the IITA Intranet to encourage knowledge of, and experience of using World Wide Web publishing for information dissemination.
  • Evaluating and introducing new technologies and multimedia computer applications to IITA where necessary.
  • Implementation of the transition from an Apple Macintosh based system to a PC based system as a requirement to maintain the institute's standardisation policy – this included training staff in the use of the Windows operating system, and ensuring all archives were PC compatible.
  • Systems management of the multimedia domain on the IITA Local Area Network. This included the software maintenance of 9 Apple Macintosh workstations, 14 PC compatible workstations running Microsoft Windows 98, and 1 PC compatible server running Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0.
  • Assisting the head of Information Services in using electronic media for the efficient transfer of documents to remote research stations through the AfricaLink project of USAID.
